In the heart-pounding world of “Percy Jackson & The Olympians,” Aryan Simhadri takes on the role of Grover Underwood, a character who embodies bravery, loyalty, and a touch of comedic relief.
In an exclusive interview with Hollywood Life, Simhadri delves into the complexities of playing Grover, his interactions with the late Lance Reddick, and the evolving dynamics between Grover and Percy, the series’ titular character.
Grover Underwood: More Than Just a Sidekick
Aryan Simhadri, at just 17 years old, brings a fresh perspective to the beloved satyr Grover in Disney+’s “Percy Jackson & The Olympians.” For Simhadri, portraying Percy’s best friend and steadfast guardian is more than just an acting gig; it’s an opportunity to explore the nuanced layers of a character dealing with extraordinary circumstances.
“The allure and complexity of participating in this series stem from the opportunity to infuse profound depth into these characters,” Aryan explains. “These are kids thrust into incredible situations – they’re battling gods, dodging law enforcement, yet at their core, they are just youngsters grappling with the world.”
Grover’s Inner Battle and Loyalty to Percy
A significant arc for Grover in the series is his battle with personal fears, especially concerning the Underworld. “Grover’s fear of the Underworld is palpable in the original book series. This translates intensely on-screen, where you can see him visibly struggling with these fears, yet he chooses to face them head-on for Percy,” Aryan reflects.
The bond between Percy and Grover is a cornerstone of “Percy Jackson & The Olympians.” Simhadri highlights the importance of their friendship and how it evolves through the series. “Their journey is filled with hurdles, but it’s Grover’s unwavering loyalty to Percy that truly anchors their quest. Even amidst the friction with Annabeth, Grover acts as the glue, keeping the team cohesive and focused.”
Recalling Lance Reddick and His Impact
Lance Reddick’s untimely passing left a void in the “Percy Jackson” community. Cast as Zeus, Reddick had completed his scenes for the series before his death. Aryan recalls his interaction with the legendary actor with warmth. “Meeting Lance Reddick was an experience I’ll always remember. The way he treated everyone on set was truly inspiring. And when I saw him act as Zeus, it was clear right away – he was the perfect person for the role.”
Looking Ahead: Aryan’s Hopes for Season 2
With a narrative as rich as Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson” series, there’s a wealth of material for future seasons. Aryan, a fan of the books himself, shares his enthusiasm for what lies ahead. “I’m especially thrilled about delving into Grover and Tyson’s connection in Book 4. It represents a crucial juncture for Grover, marking the pinnacle of his journey and the fulfillment of his quest to locate Pan.”
